Essence Flight School has the widest variety of airplanes, instructors and ratings available in the Los Angeles Basin. You can choose between Cirrus, Cessna, Diamond and Piper aircraft for your flight training. They also utilize 2 Full Motion FAA Approved Flight Simulators. They are highly focused on making students feel welcome, safe and part of an institution that will help them achieve their aviation goals as efficiently as possible.
Essence Flight School utilizes a complete syllabus for the Private Pilot Course with a total of 35 lessons. By attending 2 to 3 sessions a week, most people complete the program in about 3 months.
All flight training at Essence is done on a one-on-one basis. Students pick the best time to fly based on their own schedules. They are open 7 days a week.
Essence offers several different makes of aircraft. Most students pick one platform as the primary aircraft type, however throughout the course you will fly in all different makes to be able to comfortably rent them in the future.

Essence guarantees the lowest pricing per hour on their aircraft — if you find a lower price in the LA area, they will beat it. This is possible because they own their aircraft and maintenance facilities, and due to their volume they get the lowest fuel pricing at Van Nuys Airport.
Absolutely. Being nervous before your first flight is completely normal. Once you're up there with an experienced instructor, those nerves usually turn into pure excitement. Instructors are specifically trained to help you feel safe and comfortable. Many students felt scared at first but left their discovery flight feeling confident and eager to return.
For a Private Pilot License, you're typically looking at around $10,000–$12,000 depending on how quickly you progress. Essence offers financing for up to 15 years with just a $2,500 down payment, no co-signer needed in most cases, and you can pay it off early without penalties. You can also pay as you go.
Three main reasons: (1) Reputation — 4.9-star ratings and 400+ five-star reviews across Google and Yelp. (2) Training depth — Discovery flights, Sport, Private Pilot, Instrument, Multi-Engine, Commercial, Teens, and full Airline Pilot programs all under one roof. (3) Tools — a modern fleet and Redbird MCX full-motion simulator.
Discovery Flights (demo, for two, luxury Cirrus, multi-engine), Sport Pilot Course ($8,400), Private Pilot Courses (from $9,900), Instrument Rating Course ($11,700), Multi-Engine Rating Course ($6,400), Commercial Pilot Course (~$15,900), Airline Pilot Course / Zero-to-Airline ($65,900 with guaranteed CFI job), Teens Pilot Course ages 10–15 ($4,200), and Redbird MCX Simulator Sessions (from ~$139).
Essence publishes clear fixed-cost packages: Sport Pilot $8,400, Standard Private Pilot $9,900, Instrument $11,700, Multi-Engine $6,400, Teens $4,200, Airline Pilot (zero-to-airline) $69,900. A typical LA pay-as-you-go private pilot path is often quoted at $15,000–$17,000 at other schools. Single-engine aircraft at Essence is ~$169/hr vs $165–$239/hr at other LA-area schools.
Essence highlights itself as the largest flight school at Van Nuys Airport with a sizeable fleet, two FAA-approved simulators, and thousands of satisfied students. Their combination of fleet size, simulator capability, and full course catalog is bigger than most single-aircraft or mom-and-pop schools in the area.
Essence holds a 4.9-star rating on Google with around 350+ reviews, a 4.9-star rating on Yelp, and references over 400 five-star reviews across both platforms combined, with thousands of pilots trained — placing them at the very top of the reputable flight school conversation around Van Nuys and greater LA.
Yes. They encourage you to start with a Discovery Flight over Los Angeles, then guide you into Sport or Private Pilot training with free in-person consultations, a program selector quiz, and structured syllabi so you're never guessing about next steps.
Demo Flight / Discovery Flight for One (60 or 90 min), Discovery Flight for Two (60 or 90 min), Luxury Discovery Flight for Two (60, 90, or 120 min in a Turbo Cirrus), and Multi-Engine Discovery Flight for Two in a Piper Seminole twin. All depart Van Nuys and include hands-on time at the controls with sightseeing over the Hollywood sign, downtown LA, and the Malibu/Santa Monica coastline.
Many LA schools offer a one-time intro flight, but Essence makes it a true first lesson: ground briefing, full hands-on flying, and a structured debrief — not just a scenic ride. They've completed over 2,000 safe, successful Discovery Flights, and those flights are integrated into your logbook and future training path if you decide to continue.
The Standard Private Pilot Program includes ~40 hours of flight time, 2 hours simulator, 5 hours ground school, a structured syllabus, and full access to the Redbird MCX simulator. Pricing starts at $9,900, with larger Complete and Comprehensive options available.
Essence's fixed-price $9,900 standard Private Pilot package undercuts many LA schools where a typical PPL is estimated at $15,000–$17,000 when aircraft, instructor, and fees are added piece by piece. Their $169/hr single-engine rate is also very competitive vs $165–$239/hr at other area schools.
The Sport Pilot License program includes 30 hours flight time in a Cessna 162 Skycatcher, 3 hours on an FAA-approved simulator, 30 hours of one-on-one instruction, and books/training materials — all for a fixed price of $8,400. It's ideal for those who want to fly for fun, carry one passenger, and keep costs and medical requirements lower than a full PPL.
The Instrument Rating Course is a fixed-cost $11,700 package that includes 20 hours single-engine flight time, 20 hours in the full-motion Redbird simulator, 40 hours of dual instruction, and 10 hours of ground school.
The Multi-Engine Rating Course is an accelerated 3–4 day program using the Piper Seminole and Redbird MCX simulator. It includes 10 hours multi-engine flight, 2 hours simulator, 12 hours dual instruction, and 3 hours ground/pre/post — for a fixed cost of $6,400 with $2,500 down and two payments of $1,950.
Commercial Pilot Course for existing PPL holders at ~$15,900. Airline Pilot Course / Zero-to-Airline at $69,900, including Private, Instrument, Multi-Engine, Commercial, and instructor ratings (CFI, CFII, MEI), plus a guaranteed flight instructor job at the school.
Yes. The Teens Pilot Course is a fixed-price $4,200 program for ages 10–15, including 10 hours single-engine flight, 3 hours simulator, 13 hours dual instruction, and 7 hours ground school.
The Redbird MCX is used in almost every major course — Sport, Private, Instrument, Multi-Engine, Commercial, Teens, and Airline. It lets students practice emergencies, IFR procedures, and worst-case scenarios safely on the ground, and counts toward required training hours in several programs. A one-hour simulator demo is available starting around $139.
Essence advertises single-engine aircraft at about $169/hr — one of the lowest published rates in Los Angeles at a major airport. By comparison, Van Nuys and LA-area schools often charge $165–$239/hr for C172s, especially those with glass cockpits.
The fleet includes Cessna 162 Skycatchers, Piper Warriors/Cherokees, Diamond DA20s, Cirrus SR22 Turbo, and Piper Seminole twins — all owned outright (no leasebacks) and maintained in-house, keeping downtime low and availability high.
Essence offers self-paced and accelerated options (e.g., Private Pilot in under 30 days or spread over months), personalized scheduling with one-on-one instructors, and evening and weekend availability most days of the week.
Van Nuys is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world, with active towered operations, real-world traffic, and LA-class airspace. Training here means learning in the same environment where business jets, helicopters, and training aircraft all share the pattern — great preparation for future commercial or airline operations.
Yes. Essence offers financing for 1–15 years on many training courses. A typical plan requires a $2,500 down payment and spreads the rest across manageable monthly payments. This applies to many fixed-cost packages: Sport, Private, Multi-Engine, Instrument, and Airline Pilot.
Essence offers free in-person consultations at Van Nuys to map out a training plan, an online program selector quiz to match goals and budget, guidance on loans/financing/scheduling, ongoing mentorship, and guaranteed CFI employment for Airline Pilot graduates.
Yes. Essence has dedicated pages for Pasadena, Simi Valley, Calabasas, Agoura Hills, and other suburbs, highlighting easy freeway access and commute times. Many students are willing to drive farther because of Essence's 400+ five-star reviews, modern fleet, and full-motion simulator.
Essence maintains an in-house maintenance team for their fully owned fleet, uses FAA-approved simulators for high-risk scenarios, follows a structured curriculum by experienced FAA-certified instructors, and has completed thousands of safe flights including over 2,000 Discovery Flights without incident.
Yes — and that's exactly how Essence likes to do it. You book a Discovery Flight over Los Angeles, meet your instructor, see the facilities, and sit down (often the same day) for a free consultation. Your Discovery Flight can be logged as your first official lesson, so nothing is wasted.
Sport or Private Pilot can be done in weeks on an accelerated schedule. The core Airline Pilot Course is structured so you can complete key ratings in under a year, then move straight into a CFI job at the school to build hours toward ATP.
Not at all. While Essence is strong as an airline pilot flight school, it's equally comfortable with hobbyists — Sport Pilot for fun light-sport flying, Private Pilot for personal travel and weekend trips, and Discovery Flights as bucket-list experiences or gifts. You get a professional-level training environment regardless of your goals.
Essence checks the key boxes: 400+ five-star reviews with 4.9-star averages across platforms, competitive transparent fixed-cost packages and low hourly rates, full course lineup from Discovery Flight to Airline Pilot, modern fleet with Redbird MCX full-motion simulator and in-house maintenance, and a prime location at Van Nuys Airport — one of the best training environments in the country.
